Zero Tolerance for Sexual Harassment

2018 has been a year that has seen so many victims of sexual harassment coming forward and speaking out against their harassers and the companies that turned a blind eye to their complaints of harassment. People across the country are calling for reform to workplace policies addressing sexual harassment.

So how can sexual harassment (defined as any unwelcome conduct or comments of a sexual nature that creates an intimidating, hostile, or offensive working environment) be properly addressed in the workplace? The following are ideas to help put a stop to workplace harassment:

  • Adopt a clear policy on sexual harassment: what it is and what the consequences are.
  • Implement a zero tolerance policy for violations of the anti-sexual harassment policy
  • Require training for every employee
  • Require additional training for managers and supervisors
  • Closely monitor the workplace
  • Take all complaints seriously

Surveys show that 1 out of 10 people have been sexually harassed. For those who have been sexually harassed, only 24% reported the harassment to management. No one should be sexually harassed in the workplace and no one should be afraid to report it when they do face sexual harassment.
