Hotel Chains Make Effort to Remedy Sexual Harassment

Major hoteliers in the hotel industry have made a pledge to improve industry standards when it comes to workplace sexual harassment and assault. Hoteliers such as Hilton, Hyatt, IHG (which includes Holiday Inn and Intercontinental, among others), Marriott, and Wyndham have signed on to the partnership. The co-founder of the “Time’s Up Legal Defense Fund,” Tina Tchen, has also partnered with the hotels to change the industry standards.

While the #MeToo movement has a large part in the timing of the change, the hotel industry has always had to concern itself with worker safety, given that housekeepers and other employees often enter private rooms and may be alone. Over the last ten years, more than twenty-five percent of all sexual harassment charges were filed by individuals in industries that are heavily dependent on service workers.

The partnership will allow companies to provide ongoing training and education on identifying and reporting experiences of sexual harassment. Employees will also be provided personal safety devices to have on hand at work, including in private guest rooms.

One of the goals of this organized effort is to tailor the sexual harassment training for each hotel and location. Rather than using a stock training seminar for each hotel across the industry, the goal will be to find out what is needed at a local level to ensure thorough training and that procedures are put in place.
