Hispanic Population Grows In Portland, Oregon

Growing Hispanic Population in the Portland Metro Area

In Oregon, the Hispanic population is growing faster than the state’s population as a whole; so what does this mean for Hispanics seeking work in the state? A recent report from the Oregon Employment Department found that Hispanic Oregonians are younger, much more likely to be employed and more likely to start new businesses. Hispanics in Oregon are employed at an average of 66.9% compared to non-Hispanic whites at 56.7%.

Despite the fact that Hispanic employees in Oregon are gaining employment opportunities, previous studies indicate that Hispanics earn substantially less than non-Hispanic white Oregonians.

In particular, a 2015 study from the Oregon Commission on Hispanic Affairs reported that the annual personal earnings of Hispanic Oregonians was approximately $10,000 less than the personal earnings of non-Hispanic whites. This may be attributed to an educational gap between Hispanics and non-Hispanic whites.
