Grammys Director Sues For Sexual Harassment

Former Grammys Director Sues Recording Academy for Sexual Harassment

The former Recording Academy CEO, Deborah Dugan, has filed a charge of discrimination with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) alleging she was sexually harassed by the general counsel for the Recording Academy and put on administrative leave for raising numerous concerns about what goes on at the Grammys.

Dugan was placed on administrative leave just ten days before the 2020 Grammy Awards over an alleged misconduct complaint.

In her charge of discrimination, Dugan claims that ousted because of an email she sent December 22, 2019, to the Academy’s head of human resources, which included sexual harassment complaints against the Academy’s general counsel. She also complained of conflicts of interest, improper self-dealing by board members, and voting irregularities with respect to nominations for Grammy Awards. In her charge of discrimination, Dugan alleges that all of this improper conduct was “made possible by the ‘boys’ club’ mentality and approach to governance at the Academy.”

Dugan’s sexual harassment allegations state that the Academy’s general counsel would say inappropriate things to Dugan, such as calling her “baby,” telling her she was pretty, and telling Dugan he was “very, very rich” and that “traveling to my many homes could be something nice for us to share.”
